Tom Allen

Tom AllenThomas W. Allen has over 25 years of experience in management consulting to companies and non-profit organizations in the use of information to improve management and operations.

Mr. Allen co-founded BACG because he believes that medium-sized companies and large non-profits needed an alternative to the traditional “Big 4″ model of consulting. In recent years he has provided information technology planning and financial management improvement services to manufacturing, professional services, telecommunications, financial services, and other companies and non-profit organizations.

Mr. Allen focuses on the strategic use of information technology to achieve business objectives, with a special emphasis on the role of the user in the decision-making process. He specializes in “direction-setting” projects that include strategic systems planning, system requirements definition, software evaluation and selection, project planning, major systems replacement projects, recovery of runaway projects, and the like.

While with BACG and its predecessor firm, he has consulted for Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison LLP, Catenas Inc., Failure Analysis Associates, Lucasfilm Ltd., Charles Schwab & Co., CellularOne, Homestake Mining, Amdahl Corporation, AirTouch, Bio-Rad Laboratories, VLSI Technology, National Semiconductor, Raynet Corporation and several other clients.

Prior to co-founding BACG, he was a management consulting partner with KPMG Peat Marwick.

While with KPMG, Mr. Allen built consulting practices in several industries and managed a wide variety of projects for commercial clients and public sector organizations.

He installed a new financial management system for the State of Washington, provided systems consulting to a variety of high technology companies in Silicon Valley, conducted strategic systems planning studies for a major utility and other large clients, and performed a variety of financial management projects.

He conducted requirements definition projects, installed lease accounting systems, conducted feasibility studies, taught a management development course in Beijing, China, and successfully completed multiple consulting assignments for a large roster of clients.

Mr. Allen served for two years as a Naval officer in the Vietnam War.

He holds a BA from the University of Pennsylvania and an MBA from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business. He is a CPA and a Certified Management Consultant through the Institute of Management Consultants (IMC).
